Mission
The Information and Technology Management (ITM) department focuses on the development, application and management of information systems, the quantitative analysis of data and information, and the application of operations management concepts in organizations. The department supports programs within and between all of UT’s colleges as well as at the university level.
The ITM department offers an undergraduate degree program in MIS, a joint degree program with the finance department in Financial Enterprise Systems (FES), and an MBA concentration in information systems management. Minors in MIS and FES are also offered. The department teaches required courses included in the Electronic Media Arts and Technology (EMAT) major, the math and math programming majors, the innovation management concentration in the MBA program and the Master of Science in finance. The ITM department also supports core curricula in the College of Business undergraduate and MBA programs.
MIS Program Strategy
The strategy for the Management Information Systems (MIS) program is to offer multiple paths to success enabling our students to obtain core competencies in information systems concepts while tailoring their learning to fit their desired career objectives and meet industry needs. The strategy is supported by a curriculum based on national standards; use of contemporary information systems methodologies, techniques, and tools across courses; partnership with local industry; and student-focused extracurricular programs and organizations. Faculty scholarship in the ITM department includes a strong on-going interest in teaching and student learning.
MIS Methods and Tools
The department integrates contemporary information systems methodologies, techniques and tools across required and elective courses. Using a continuous improvement process the curriculum is frequently reviewed and updated. As a result of this process the MIS curriculum has evolved to include:
- Coverage of a wide range of topics across the fields of management, information systems development and information technology
- The adoption of object-oriented methodologies in addition to structured methods in analysis, design and programming
- The integration of web-based programming, development and design
- The integration of enterprise architecture concepts, enterprise development tools and their impact on business processes
- Increased emphasis on security and risk management
- Increased emphasis on business analysis, data mining and data warehousing concepts
- The use of the latest software tools, facilitated through alliances with industry leaders
