Campus Recruiting
We’re delighted that you are interested in sharing your employment opportunities with The University of Tampa students and alumni. The Office of Career Services is dedicated to facilitating that connection through a variety of services, programming and partnerships with the UT campus and external communities to enable your success.
All employment professionals wishing to recruit on-campus are required to work within the framework of professionally accepted recruiting, interviewing and selection techniques and guidelines. These include the recruiting and offer policies detailed below by The Office of Career Services, the Nondiscrimination Policy of The University of Tampa, the NACE Principles for Professional Practice for Career Services & Employment Professionals and the United States Department of Labor FLSA Guidelines (as it relates to paid vs. unpaid internships). If it is determined, through observation or student complaints, that an employer’s actions are in violation of these policies, the Office of Career Services reserves the right to suspend an organization’s access to campus recruiting services and support pending the result of a review.
All employers must be deemed legitimate organizations with a verifiable business name, physical address, email address, phone number, website (if applicable), and the name of a contact who can be reached at the address(es) provided. Florida-based businesses may be verified by the state’s Division of Corporations while foreign-based organizations may be verified by the U.S. Department of State.
In addition to the aforementioned policies and guidelines, note that we do not accept postings from the following:
- Employers posting full-time positions that do not require at least a bachelor’s degree.
- Employers posting internships that do not require the pursuit of a bachelor’s degree.
- Employers offering full-time positions listed with a rate of pay lower than minimum wage (internships may be unpaid or compensated with a stipend).
- Employers offering internships that do not provide a learning environment supported by supervision for their interns.
- Employers using personal email address (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo, etc.); employer must always use their business email addresses.
Employers posting with us must also be aware of the following with regards to 1099 positions:
- For current students, employers must have an "employer-employee" relationship for paid positions (W-2) and have no required fees (other than professional licensure fees for career employees).
- 1099 positions are eligible for posting on Handshake for experienced graduates (3+ years) and must include the following disclaimer in the job posting: "This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent contractors are required to pay all self-employment taxes (Social Security & Medicare) as well as income tax. Independent contractors generally do not receive any type of employment benefits from the client. For more information, please refer to www.irs.gov or consult a tax professional."
- 1099 independent contractor recruiting is not permitted at Career Fairs nor eligible for On-Campus Interviews or Resume Referral Services.
- Employers must subscribe to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws established by the Federal government and the State of Florida.
All job and internship postings are subject to approval. The Office of Career Services reserves the final right to determine which postings are appropriate for inclusion in its database of listings.
The campus recruiting season at The University of Tampa is approximately 12 weeks long and occurs only during the fall and spring semesters. Generally, the fall semester season begins prior to the Labor Day holiday, while the spring semester season begins the week of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Refer to the campus recruiting calendar for the most updated list of major events and campus activities for your consideration and planning purposes.
The Office of Career Services uses the NACE definition of third-party recruiters as "...agencies, organizations or individuals recruiting candidates for temporary, part-time or full-time employment opportunities other than for their own needs. This includes entities that refer or recruit for profit or not for profit as well as agencies that collect student information to be disclosed to employers for purposes of recruitment and employment."
We follow general NACE guidelines in working with third-party agencies as published in the Principles for Professional Conduct for Career Services and Employment Professionals.
We provide direct assistance to third-party agencies that meet the following criteria:
- Third party recruiters will be allowed to post positions if they provide a full job/internship description for a valid opening and disclose the nature of the relationship between the agency and the employer to career services staff. Although not required to be included in the posting itself, it is required that the name of the employer for which the third party is providing recruiting services be provided to Career Services. UT will not solicit business away from third-party recruiters by offering to deal directly with the employer. If the named employer is already involved in on-campus recruiting efforts at UT, this creates a conflict of interest, warranting further determination as to whether or not the third party agency may participate.
- In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), any candidate information provided by the college or University will be for the exclusive use of the recruiting agency and the identified employer. Re-disclosure of candidate information is not permitted.
- Third party recruiters must comply with all federal and state Equal Employment Opportunity laws (Titles VI(6) and IX(9) and ADA).
- Third party recruiters are prohibited from charging any fees to students in exchange for services.
Network Marketing Organizations are not considered to be "employers" by the Office of Career Services and are not eligible to participate in on-campus interviewing, resume referrals, job postings, employer presentations and/or sponsorships for on-campus activities. Career Services considers organizations that engage in the following to be Network Marketing Organizations:
- Sponsoring an individual to set up his/her own business for the purpose of selling products or services and/or recruiting other individuals to set up their own business.
-AND-
- Requiring an initial cash or capital investment, account balance or similar fiscal requirements from this individual, with the organization itself serving as an umbrella or parent corporation. The initial investment may include, but is not limited to such things as, direct payment of a fixed fee, payment to attend an orientation or training session and/or purchase of a starter kit.
Another characteristic of a Network Marketing Organization may be that compensation is in the form of straight commission, fees from others under their sponsorship in the organization and/or a percentage of sales generated by others.
The Office of Career Services strives to provide information that will connect University of Tampa students and alumni to the best possible employment opportunities offering training, support and structure in internships, entry-level and experienced-hire positions appropriate to recent graduates and alumni. To the greatest extent possible, we seek opportunities that offer our talent work experience that is aligned with their field of study or career goals AND provides the opportunity for continued professional development and skills-building while on-the-job. Due to varying employment, business and compensation models used by employers, the Office of Career Services will exercise discretion in working with employers that wish to post commission-only positions.
Commission-based sales, full-time opportunities and paid summer/internship opportunities must comply with the following criteria:
- Direct Hire (W-2) positions only.
- 1099 positions are eligible for posting on HIRE-UT for experienced graduates (3+ years) and must include the following disclaimer in the posting: "This is a 1099 position. Independent contractors are required to pay all self-employment taxes (Social Security and Medicare) as well as income tax. Independent contractors generally do not receive any type of employment benefits from the client. For more information please refer to www.irs.gov or consult a tax professional."
