Pianist Duncan MacMillan to Give Recital at UT Sept. 18

Claude Debussy’s Préludes will be the focus of a performance by pianist Duncan MacMillan on Sunday, Sept. 18, at The University of Tampa. The concert begins at 2 p.m. in Plant Hall’s Fletcher Lounge and is free and open to the public.

MacMillan will play the complete Préludes for piano, composed by the French Impressionist composer in 1909–1910 (Book 1) and 1912–1913 (Book 2). There are 12 préludes in each book, and all but one is connected by title to an extra-musical subject. Some of the more famous preludes include The Girl with the Flaxen Hair, The Sunken Cathedral and Fireworks.

MacMillan is an active solo pianist, harpsichordist, chamber musician and composer. In addition to playing the standard repertoire, he has premiered works by many composers — some written or commissioned especially for him. His compositions have been commissioned, recorded and performed internationally, and have been featured on NPR.

He teaches piano, harpsichord and music history at UT and has served on the artist faculty of the UT summer piano camps. He also lectures in music and ancient Greek studies at Eckerd College and has maintained a private piano studio since 1977.
