University of Tampa To Host Other Words Literary Conference Oct. 11–13
“Water: flood, fish, drought, swim, drink, rain, rivers, tears, dams, oceans and other sundry wetness” is the theme of this year’s 2018 Other Words Literary Conference, which will be held on The University of Tampa campus from Thursday, Oct. 11, through Saturday, Oct. 13.Organized by the Florida Literary Arts Coalition and sponsored by UT, the goal of the conference is to bring together writers, editors, agents, publishers, book sellers, grant administrators, directors of writers’ colonies and retreats, and others to talk about the how to of literary arts: how to write it, make it, sell it, fund it and nurture it.The events that the public and media may attend are as follows:

- Faculty Reading by Pablo Cartaya, Bob Kunzinger and Gerry LaFemina, Thursday, Oct. 11, from 7:30–9 p.m., Vaughn Center Trustees Board Room. Cartaya is an award-winning author, speaker, actor and educator, who wrote the acclaimed middle-grade novels The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora and Marcus Vega Doesn’t Speak Spanish. Kunzinger is an essay writer who has been published in a variety of publications. LaFemina is an award-winning writer of novels, short stories and poetry.
- Featured Reading by Jessica Anthony and Frank X. Gaspar, Friday, Oct. 12, from 7:30–9 p.m., Scarfone/Hartley Gallery. Anthony is the author of The Convalescent, an Adult Notable Book that was a Barnes and Noble “Discover Great New Writers” selection, and Chopsticks, a multimedia novel created in collaboration with designer Rodrigo Corral. Gaspar is the author of five collections of poetry and two novels that specialize in American themes or settings, particularly in the Portuguese community.
- Key Note Reading by Peter Meinke, Poet Laureate of Florida, Saturday, Oct. 13, from 4:30–5:30 p.m., Vaughn Center Reeves Theater. With introduction by Richard Mathews, director of The University of Tampa Press.
