UT One of First Universities to Gain Information Security Certification

The University of Tampa has earned the distinction of being one of the first U.S. universities to be ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certified in three areas of the University: information security, human resources and the management of information technology.

ISO/IEC 27001 is an internationally recognized best practice framework for Information Security Management System (ISMS). Achieving ISO/IEC 27001 certification demonstrates a strong leadership commitment to information security and recognition of the ongoing need to make continuous improvements to identify and reduce risks to important information.

Major organizations worldwide, primarily in the corporate sector (ex. Microsoft, Cisco and Apple), have also become ISO/IEC 27001 certified.

Tammy Clark, UT’s chief information security officer, said that in order to build a robust and effective data protection program, UT turned to the ISO/IEC 27001 standard, as it emphasizes people, process and technology. As a result, security awareness has been elevated throughout the University community and administrative departments have collaborated to help protect confidential information.

“It has been rewarding to work even more closely with the offices of Human Resources and Information Technology in achieving certification, and I thank President Vaughn for his support and leadership as well,” Clark said.
