UT Student Newspaper Named Best in Florida

The Minaret, the University of
Tampa's student newspaper, was named best college newspaper in the
Florida College Press Association’s (FCPA) 2007 Better Newspaper
Contest.
The Minaret also won a first place for best general news writing and a third place for best front page design. Peter Arrabal, a senior from Baltimore, MD, won a third place for best feature writing, and former UT student Daniel Dorsa won a third place for best photography.
The awards were for work published during the 2007 calendar year and were announced last week. Entries were judged by members of the Florida Press Association.
Arrabal, the current editor-in-chief of The Minaret, said the award “shows how much we are growing and improving every year, thanks to the hard work of our staff and adviser.”
The Minaret, a weekly, has been published on the UT campus since 1933.
This was the first awards contest for the FCPA, which began in 2007 as a partnership between college and university newspapers in the state and the Florida Press Association. FCPA boasts 13 member newspapers that range from small private colleges to large public universities including the University of Miami, Florida Atlantic University, Stetson University, Eckerd College and Florida A&M University.
“There's a lot of great journalism taking place throughout the state on college campuses, and we were thrilled to recognize it with these awards,” said Brian Thompson, president of FCPA Board of Directors.
