UT to Host Mathematicians from Around the State

Mathematicians from around the state will meet to discuss Fibonacci identities, Bulgarian solitaire, StatCrunch applets, sabermetrics and more at the annual meeting of the Florida Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the Two-Year College Mathematics Association on Feb. 22–23 at The University of Tampa.

The program consists of a variety of talks concerning new mathematical developments, by mathematics faculty and students. The program will begin on Friday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. in Reeves Theater on campus with a talk by Larry Hall, professor of computer science and engineering at the University of South Florida, on “Exploring Big Data with Scalable Soft Clustering.”

Approximately 200 participants from colleges, universities and community colleges from around the state are expected to be in attendance.

Also on Friday, at 6:15 p.m., Haig Mardirosian, dean of the UT College of Arts and Letters, will perform an organ recital at the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values. According to Mardirosian, “all music is mathematics.” The recital will contain pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Louis Vierne and Alexandre Guilmant, and is open to all meeting participants and to the public.

The Mathematical Association of America (www.maa.org) is a nationwide organization that promotes mathematics in all its aspects. The last time the Florida chapter held a meeting at UT was in 1983.
