One piece of advice soon-to-be graduate Sabrina Schmidt ’18, MBA ’18 has for students is to take advantage of campus resources.

Schmidt did, utilizing the online resources in Career Services to land an internship as an undergrad with iQor, and as a graduate student with Reed Transport Services as a freight broker intern.

She attended both the Resume Day and Meet the Firms events, where she landed interviews and a job offer by DXC Technology as an ERP functional consultant, apprenticing under a senior team member who will assist in training her in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems implementation, which are used to streamline business processes.

“For incoming UT students, make sure you are using the campus resources. They are undervalued and underutilized,” said Schmidt, of St. Petersburg, FL. “It is never too early to start networking.”

Red tide, an unusually persistent harmful algal bloom that impacted the Florida coastline this summer with waves of fish killed, was the subject of senior biology major Alexandra Sullivan’s research this fall.

Sullivan researched organisms that were able to sustain life in red tide conditions in Electron Microscopy. As she collected, prepped and imaged water samples immediately before the organisms died, she said her project was extremely hands-on and engaging.

“I have gained a lot of critical thinking skills from this course and have been able to apply so much of this knowledge to other courses, too,” said Sullivan. “I’ve also realized that many images in journals and articles are actually done on a scanning electron microscope, so it has been amazing to have the privilege to do the same.”

The University of Tampa Spartans are the NCAA Division II national champions.

On Dec. 1 in the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, PA, the No. 1 seeded Spartans defeated the No. 3 seed, Western Washington University Vikings, in a five-set thriller to win the title. This is the third volleyball title in program history, the first since 2014 and the 16th overall NCAA championship for Tampa.

For most days last summer, Rachel Wall ’20 found herself working in 2-foot deep pits or sifting through dirt to find ancient artifacts, something she’s planning to repeat during winter break. As a volunteer with the Antigua Archaeological Field School program at Indian Creek, she’d be covered in dirt by the end of the day from sifting through mound after mound to find shells, pottery and whatever other treasures awaited her.

“I did more of the hands-on stuff with the doctors in the field, setting up the site each day to make sure the level of the site was appropriate and performing the distance measurements. I did some of the sorting on site, like sorting shells into piles,” Wall said.

“I also got to rearticulate vertebrae and put some pottery back together,” she said excitedly.
