“Water: flood, fish, drought, swim, drink, rain, rivers, tears, dams, oceans and other sundry wetness” is the theme of this year’s 2018 Other Words Literary Conference, which will be held on The University of Tampa campus from Thursday, Oct. 11, through Saturday, Oct. 13.

Organized by the Florida Literary Arts Coalition and sponsored by UT, the goal of the conference is to bring together writers, editors, agents, publishers, book sellers, grant administrators, directors of writers’ colonies and retreats, and others to talk about the how to of literary arts: how to write it, make it, sell it, fund it and nurture it.

The University of Tampa’s choral ensembles will perform during Family Weekend on Friday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. The “choral collage” concerts, which will include performances by UT’s Chamber Singers, Camerata, and the Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs, will take place in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith Values and are free and open to the public.

Each choir will present repertoire of different styles and from different historical areas.

On Sunday, Oct. 7, organist Haig Mardirosian will present “A Program of Firsts” as part of The University of Tampa’s Damron Concert Artist Series in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values. The concert will begin at 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Mardirosian is dean emeritus of UT’s College of Arts and Letters and professor emeritus of music at American University in Washington, D.C.

For the 22nd consecutive year, The University of Tampa has set another enrollment record. This year’s total enrollment — including graduates and undergraduates — is 9,304 — up 4 percent from last year’s total of 8,913. This year’s total enrollment is quadruple the University’s enrollment of two decades ago.

Madeline Robinson, executive director of Wheelchairs 4 Kids, will receive the Tampa Bay Ethics Award from The University of Tampa Center for Ethics at a breakfast and ceremony on Friday, Oct. 12. The event is from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the Vaughn Center Crescent Club on the UT campus, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd.

Robinson started Wheelchairs 4 Kids, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of children with physical disabilities, along with her husband in 2011. With the help of Wheelchairs 4 Kids, families can receive wheelchairs, home and vehicle modifications, and therapeutic equipment at no charge.
