The University of Tampa announced it successfully completed its second-ever comprehensive capital campaign — and raised more than $160 million.

The funds — donated by more than 15,000 supporters — were used to grow the University’s endowment, build new facilities, develop academic programs and support faculty, as well as provide student scholarships.

One of the campaign’s priorities — construction of the Graduate and Health Studies Building — will be celebrated this Friday, Aug. 31, at a 9:30 a.m. grand opening at the newly opened building in the center of campus. Media and the public are welcome to attend and tour the new building.

The UT/TMA Performing Arts Series, which is free and open to the public, will occur on the first Wednesday of every month at noon at the Tampa Museum of Art in downtown Tampa. Both UT students and faculty will perform, and the performances will span many of the musical and performing arts genres that students from across the country come to UT to study and practice.

Swimming with sharks is often portrayed as high-energy, adrenaline-pumpingactivity. The reality is much different, said UT marine science-biology majorTaylor Cunningham ’19.

“You’re in open water so you can’t see the bottom. It’s open blue, and it’s very peaceful,” said Cunningham, who is the intern coordinator for OneOcean Diving in Hawaii.

One Ocean takes swimmers to a ridge in the open ocean that’s about400 to 500 feet deep where Galapagos, sandbar, and the occasional scallopedhammerhead and tiger sharks congregate to rest.

“People get out into the water with the sharks and realize they’renot what media portrays them to be, and seeing people come back saying, ‘Wow, Iwas so scared, and now I love them and want to protect them,’ is reallyrewarding for us.”

The University of Tampa has been selected as a screening partner for the 2018-2019 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, a program facilitated by the nonprofit regional arts organization South Arts.

The tour will bring six films — selected by UT faculty — and their directors to UT. Each film screening includes an opportunity for the audience to participate in a Q-and-A with the filmmaker, further exploring the content of the film or their work in the industry.
