Andrew Gilliland’s most recent business was launched out of the McNeel Boathouse, where he was a resident assistant in an entrepreneurship learning community. He met his first business partner there, and while the two eventually parted ways, Gilliland has been hard at work since growing iSpyPens to a six-figure business.
Gilliland, a junior, is no longer living in the Boathouse, but the business followed him to his current residence hall room, where boxes of product are stacked and stored. He is literally living and breathing his business.
“I just always have loved projects and creativity. It’s a way I’ve always thought,” Gilliland said. “I consider myself lucky because I found my passion — business and technology — when I was young, and a lot of people don’t necessarily know what they want to do.”

On Tuesday, Jan. 23, The University of Tampa will welcome entrepreneur, investor, bestselling author and tech media personality Randi Zuckerberg as part of the Lowth Entrepreneurship Center’s Today’s Entrepreneurial Women speaker series.The program, which will be held in Plant Hall, Fletcher Lounge, will run from 1–2 p.m., followed by a networking reception from 2–3 p.m. The program will be moderated by Rebecca White, director of UT’s Lowth Entrepreneurship Center.

The leaders of Tampa General Hospital, Fitlife Foods and Tampa Electric are slated to speak at the next Business Network Symposium at The University of Tampa on Tuesday, Jan. 23. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins with a continental breakfast at 7:15 a.m. with the program running from 7:45–9 a.m. on the ninth floor of the Vaughn Center, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd.

University of Tampa students, faculty and staff will honor the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a day of service to the Tampa Bay community on Saturday, Jan. 20.
“Through the PEACE Volunteer Center’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service students get the opportunity to celebrate Dr. King’s dedication to activism by participating in community service in the Tampa Bay area,” said Liz Ho Sing Loy-Keiler ’19, a student coordinator in UT’s PEACE Volunteer Center.

On Tuesday, Jan. 23, The University of Tampa will welcome (forte)pianist Mike Cheng-Yu Lee, whose performances have been described as “absolutely radiant, a lesson in refinement mixed with deep devotion” (Herald Times, Bloomington, IN). The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values and is free and open to the public.Lee will perform Mozart’s Sonata in C major, K. 330, Haydn’s Sonata in C major, Hob. XVI: 48 and Beethoven’s Sonata in C-sharp minor “quasi una Fantasia,” Op. 27, No. 2.
