It’s that time of year when students pack up their belongings, say goodbye to family and friends, and (for some) travel across the country (or world!) to start their journey as The University of Tampa’s newest Spartans.

Check it out in the 2017 Move-in Storify.

Research shows that emotions are essentially contagious, and thus a leader’s attitude and energy can “infect” a workplace either for better or for worse.

Learn the skills you need to be a strong, emotionally intelligent leader at The University of Tampa’s Emotional Intelligence for Leaders, presented by the Sykes College of Business TECO Energy Center for Leadership and the Society for Emotional Intelligence. This three-day certificate program is scheduled for 6–9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, and 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15–16, in the Sykes College of Business, Room 150.

As an undergraduate, Ricardo Garcia ’14 had a lot on his plate. He was taking five classes, doing two internships and was involved in the active professional business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi. He’d often miss last-minute emails from his professors about assignments or forget to check Blackboard, soon finding himself in class unprepared. Trying to stay organized and on top of his studies was a challenge.

“I thought there must be a better way,” said Garcia, an international business management major with minors in both entrepreneurship and marketing. “We’re always on our phones. Why isn’t there something out there that’d notify me on my phone if something changed in the classroom.”

His frustration was channeled at the right time in one of his entrepreneurship courses. He was asked by Professor Rebecca White to come up with a business plan for a concept, and his application, Classuite, was born.

Maya Patel ’20 fiddled with the beaded bracelet while she talked about the trip where she bought it. The bracelet, with its black, red and green stripes of the Kenyan flag, connects her to the two UT friends she stayed with for two weeks in Nairobi who also have the bracelet. But even more so, it’s a reminder of the impactful experience she had as a volunteer.

This summer, Patel volunteered with Global Dental Relief, a nonprofit whose mission is to bring free dental care to children around the world.
