The University of Tampa MFA in Creative Writing speaker series, “Lectores,” will feature seven nights of readings with a mix of award-winning visiting authors and UT’s world-renowned MFA faculty from Jan. 5–12.

The series kicks off on Thursday, Jan. 5, with a reading by Colson Whitehead, the No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of The Underground Railroad (an Oprah’s Book Club Selection). Whitehead is a National Book Award winner and recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship.

A couple months ago Cristina Muyshondt ’16 was having a moment of crisis about her future. Fast forward several weeks and Muyshondt was confidently giving the class challenge at UT’s 2016 December Commencement.

What changed in the weeks in between? She consulted with her mother who she said, “Told me it was time to look inside myself and find courage, not bravery but courage.”

Jocelyn Boigenzahn, an art historian and professor, has been named by The University of Tampa as the director of the University’s Scarfone/Hartley Gallery of Art.

As director, Boigenzahn will be responsible for daily gallery operations, grant writing and fundraising, and exhibition and budget planning. Her goals for the gallery are to modernize, digitize and expand access to the University art collection and services of the gallery for the benefit of the UT and greater Tampa Bay communities. She will begin Tuesday, Jan. 3.

The University of Tampa is showcasing the work of five student artists graduating from the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at “Humanature — The 2016 BFA Exhibition” now through Dec. 17 at the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery. There will be a reception to honor the graduates on Friday, Dec. 16, from 7–9 p.m.

This group show features 91 works. Each body of work represents the culmination of four years of study and details the level of conceptual and technical expertise of the artists in ceramics, photography, printing, sculpture, digital art, oil painting, assemblage, pyrography and installation.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, or rather the beginning of a semester seemingly far, far away, Ryan Hoffman ’16 embarked on a mission to create something indicative of his cumulative knowledge: the senior project.

But Hoffman doesn’t like to do anything that doesn’t push him. So he combined two senior projects — with Douglas Sutherland, assistant professor of art, and Corey George, the multimedia lab coordinator and lecturer in communication — plus help with computer coding from Santiago Echeverry, associate professor of art, into creating a Bluetooth-controlled replica R2-D2 of Star Wars fame.
