Victoria Piechnik ’18 teared up a bit the first time she saw a great white shark on one of the Oceans Research boats, a shark that found its way there after Piechnik chummed the water and wrestled it with a bait rope. She wasn’t scared though — instead she was living out a childhood dream.

“I’ve wanted to see one ever since I was young,” said Piechnik, a marine science–biology major. “It seriously feels like I’m living shark week.”

Beginning on Monday, Aug. 1, The University of Tampa will ban all smoking and tobacco use on campus.

The policy, which was announced in January, bans smoking and use of tobacco of all types, including electronic cigarettes, chew tobacco, hookah, cigar and cigarette smoking. It includes all UT students, employees — including contractors — and visitors, and covers the entire 105-acre UT campus, including all academic and residential buildings, athletic facilities and fields, parking garages, open spaces and offices. Students, faculty and staff will enforce the new policy.

Zachary Gregg ’17 has his mind set on graduate school. For no other reason than because he likes to learn.

“I have a strong desire to learn and do research beyond what a student can do at an undergraduate level,” said Gregg, a chemistry major from North East, MD. “I want to be a part of the process of learning new information, rather than just absorbing it.”

Gregg is spending 10 weeks of his summer with the Research Experience for Undergraduates program hosted by Florida International University’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Francesca DeVito ’17 starts her mornings with a run, capped off by a panoramic view of Florence, Italy, before stopping by a café for an iced coffee and heading into her part-time job with a tour company.

DeVito is working and studying this summer in the capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, an opportunity she thought was out of her reach. While she wanted to study abroad, she needed to complete an internship and also didn’t want to miss a full semester at UT because of her involvement with her sorority. But she found perfect program while searching online.
