James MacLeod ’70 opened his commencement address to the Class of 2016 by encouraging them that “ordinary people can do extraordinary things.”

He highlighted the past commencement speakers he has witnessed in his nine years as a University trustee, from Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to entrepreneur and alum Ariel Acosta-Rubio ’84. “As a rather unremarkable University of Tampa economics major who collected his share of mediocre grades during my years here, I wondered what I might say that you can take away from this special gathering today to use in the years ahead,” he said.

But reflecting on his accomplishments since graduation, he concluded that with hard work and a commitment to do one’s best, “ordinary people can do extraordinary things.”

Alex Hance ’16 didn’t realize at the time that his on-campus job experience as the lead lab tech for the computer labs on campus would land him a job with Google.

“During my first contact with a recruiter at Google, they mentioned they felt like my IT experience at UT was aligned to the Google position and helped get me the first interview and spark interest in my resume,” said Hance, a double major in entrepreneurship and management information systems.

Hance heads to Google’s New York City office for a two-year training/management program for new graduates as an IT resident.

“I know a lot of you want to save the world. But I want to let you know that it’s okay if you only save one person. And it’s okay if that person is yourself.”

This is just one of the entries on the Humans of UT Facebook page, which was started for a class as a riff on Humans of New York, the popular blog featuring portraits and interviews of people the author finds on the streets of New York City.

In Humans of UT, Sarah DeTemple ’17, a secondary education-mathematics major, and Olivia Reeb ’18, a secondary social science education major, capture glimpses of the life of UT students. The quote about saving the world struck a chord with Reeb.

“I spend a lot of time trying to help people, trying to save people. Humans of UT actually started as an idea of how I could save people. I figured that if someone could read this page and realize that someone else felt the same way they did, they would feel less alone in their struggles,” Reeb said.

It’s not often that students get to suggest business strategies to one of the world’s most recognized coffee brands. But that’s exactly what Starbucks offered to UT’s business majors.

Starbucks allowed the approximately 350 senior-level students to group in 70 teams to pitch business ideas to Starbucks leaders in a case study competition. The student teams were tasked with considering all facets of the multi-national corporation and come up with innovations to strengthen the Starbucks business.
