Balancing farm life and emails is not always the easiest thing, said Kristin Anderson ’15. But for the energetic and bubbly senior, Anderson takes it in stride.

Most students know Anderson as this year’s Student Government president and an active member of her sorority, the Panhellenic Council, the Honors program and the UT Diplomats.

What most don’t know is that Anderson feels most connected, most at home, when she is getting her hands dirty on the farm.

Lisa Aquilino ’15 wanted to study abroad before she graduated next spring. So when she heard about a UT travel course to study documentary filmmaking in Ecuador, she enrolled.

“It is my dream to be a video editor, and on this trip, that is exactly what I got to do,” said Aquilino.

Growing up in Salvatore DeGaetano’s Italian-American family meant big family gatherings, lots of food and nearly everyone speaking Italian.

“On my dad’s side of the family I’m the only one who isn’t fluent in Italian,” said DeGaetano ’15. “All my family members had to switch to English to talk with me, and that bothered me.”

When the opportunity presented itself to study abroad this summer in Florence, Italy, DeGaetano didn’t have to think twice.

When Maria Cate ’16 puts pen to paper, she draws nonstop — sometimes for nearly half a day — until her project is complete. Her mind is clear of thought, she is focused, and aside from music, she is free of the noises (both audible and inaudible) of life’s distractions.

“It helps me relax,” said Cate, who turned a lifelong penchant for drawing into Twisted Hand, a company she founded officially in January, and one she is balancing with two law internships and a class this summer.
