When Lauren Manke ’14 walks across the stage at Saturday's commencement, she’ll be leaving behind a healthy legacy at UT. Manke was a driving force in eliminating the use of all tobacco products on campus except in designated smoking zones, which is one step closer to making UT an entirely smoke-free campus.

Manke was student coordinator for Breathe Easy UT, a Live Well at UT initiative that championed the policy change.

“I’d like to think I’ve made an impact,” said Manke, of Chicago. “I’d love to see campus smoke-free, but I know I’m leaving (the initiative) in good hands.”

UT undergraduate student Brett McQuaide was awarded $10,000 in seed money to reach the beta testing phase for his new “Stir Stick” business product at the Spartan Accelerator program last Friday.

The item, which features thermochromic ink, lets people know when their cup of coffee is at the perfect drinkable temperature.

McQuaide was one of four UT student-run business ventures that had the opportunity to present their business plans to local entrepreneurial judges — all competing for a chance to gain $25,000 in no-payback seed capital.

Tomorrow, May 2 from 2-4 p.m., leaders of four UT student-run businesses will have the opportunity to present their business plans to local entrepreneurial judges and win $25,000 in no payback seed capital.

The students will present a formal investor business plan presentation, and the judges are from Sherloq Solutions and Florida Funders. The award will be funded on a milestone basis to ensure that each step in the business building process has been evaluated.
