Research is typically thought of as a pursuit for faculty or graduate students, but participating in a research project as an undergraduate gives students a better understanding of their field and the opportunity to develop relationships with faculty. The University of Tampa will celebrate undergraduate research at the University with a series of events from April 24–30.

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered if we are alone in the universe?

Simon Schuler, assistant professor of physics, doesn’t think we are the only ones in this world. He said the first step in answering this universal question is to find planets like Earth that are in the “habitable zone” of a star, where the temperature is not too hot or too cold and liquid water can exist. One of Schuler’s current research projects may help scientists find these planets more quickly. “We have to start with what we know,” said Schuler. VIDEO

The annual Juried Student Art Exhibition, on display now through April 24, gives students from any major at The University of Tampa an opportunity to display their artwork to the public at the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery on campus.

Pieces in the exhibition are from a variety of media, including paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, ceramics, sculpture, digital media, animations and mixed media. Juried by UT’s fine arts faculty, all work is original and not previously displayed in the Scarfone/Hartey Gallery.

Katherine Pyne ’14 likes to be challenged — whether it’s on the tennis court or out on the ocean.

A member of UT’s tennis team, Pyne has always been drawn to fitness. When her high school tennis coach started the stand-up paddleboarding business SUP Sarasota and convinced Pyne to give it a try, she was hooked.

“People don’t realize how tough it can be,” Pyne said.

That’s because Pyne isn’t lazing her way down a river. She’s digging into chop among 50 or so others going head to head — or rather, board to board — in competitive SUP races.
