NEH Summer Institute participants at former cigar factory in Ybor City.

The Center for José Martí Studies Affiliate at The University of Tampa envisions its 2019 NEH Summer Institute “José Martí and the Immigrant Communities of Florida in Cuban Independence and the Dawn of the American Century” as an ongoing project to disseminate the unique and fascinating history of the cigar towns of late 19th century Florida, and to stimulate and encourage its continued study and academic consideration. To this end we are providing access to all of the lectures given by our visiting and affiliated faculty, as well the original material produced by our participant NEH scholars.

Over the course of the 2019 NEH Summer Institute, participants designed original teaching modules (and complete courses in some cases) and/or a research prospectus. They then presented their work during the final two days of the institute (see Conference Program below). A great deal of this material is available here, with participant permission, as a useful resource for teachers and researchers who wish to incorporate the study of José Martí and/or the immigrant communities of turn-of-the-century Florida into their courses or scholarly research.
