The University of Tampa has announced that former Tampa mayor Pam Iorio has accepted an appointment as leader-in-residence in the TECO Center for Leadership in the Sykes College of Business this upcoming year.
Iorio will be working in a variety of ways to help in the leadership center with advice, guest lecturing, advocacy of UT leadership initiatives in the community and general involvement with UT faculty, students and leadership programs.
The TECO Center for Leadership is one of the nation's most innovative leadership development initiatives, with programs designed to provide transformative learning experiences for individuals and organizations pursuing sustainable business excellence.
“Pam Iorio has had a long history with the University of Tampa before and while she was mayor of Tampa, and now her talents will benefit a larger group in the UT community and in the Sykes College of Business,” said Frank Ghannadian, dean of the Sykes College of Business and director of TECO Center for Leadership.
In April, Iorio completed two terms as Tampa’s mayor, and left with an 87 percent approval rating. During her eight years in office, crime was reduced 61.5 percent, government was trimmed, bank reserves tripled, badly needed infrastructure was updated and downtown was revitalized.
Iorio began her public service career in 1985 being elected to the Hillsborough County Commission, and then was elected three times to the office of Supervisor of Elections for Hillsborough County. She has served on the Aviation Authority, the Port Authority, UT’s Board of Trustees, the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority and the Board of the Tampa-Hillsborough Economic Development Corp.
On Sept. 23 Iorio is scheduled to receive the Tampa Bay Ethics Award at a ceremony hosted by UT’s Center for Ethics. This award recognizes individuals who promote and encourage ethics and integrity in the workplace or other organizations, and who exhibit respect, trustworthiness and fairness.
