Stop by The University of Tampa on Thursday, Nov. 30, for the free, festive Glee Winter Concert. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values and is free and open to the public.
The concert will feature the UT Men’s Glee Club and Women’s Glee Club, conducted by Ryan Hebert, associate professor of music, and Rodney Shores, artist associate faculty, and accompanied by Teresa Ancaya, a Tampa Bay area piano soloist and accompanist.
According to Hebert, the concert will feature a variety of music that should appeal to just about everyone. Along with selections of holiday music, there will also be a great deal of repertoire not directly related to the holidays.
The Men’s Glee Club will open with a piece by Edmund Hughes called “Alleluia, Rejoice,” which combines the chant, Veni Emmanuel, with the traditional chant for Christmas, Hodie Christus Natus Est.
“For lack of a better description, it has a very haunting sound, mysterious — like sounds you might experience in a medieval monastery,” said Hebert.
The American folk song “Down in the Valley” and the famous “I Dreamed a Dream” ballad from Les Miserables will follow. They will close with the traditional spiritual “I’ve got Peace Like a River” and the holiday classic “The Grinch.”
“This is a hilarious, and fun setting of a tune many, may recognize from the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” said Hebert.
For their set, Women’s Glee will begin with “A Celebration of British Carols,” followed by “Cantate Domino” and “There is No Rose.” They will then perform the traditional Jewish hymn “Hin Ma Tov” and close the concert with the popular holiday song “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
