Martina Emme, a prominent German scholar working on Holocaust reconciliation, will speak at The University of Tampa on Thursday, Jan. 23.
Emme, a descendant of Nazi officers, works with descendants of Holocaust victims to establish reconciliation and dialogue.
She will speak to a class on capital punishment, will have a luncheon workshop with student leaders and will give a public address at the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values at 4 p.m.
Emme’s visit to UT is in collaboration with the commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is sponsored by the Consular Corps of Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay Trade and Protocol Council.
Emme has been an instructor in ethics at the University of Potsdam, taught multiculturalism for teachers in the former East Germany, and was one of the founding members of One by One, an organization that brings together groups of descendants of Holocaust survivors and descendants of the Nazi regime. She received her doctorate from the Technical University in Berlin, completing a doctoral thesis entitled “The Attempt to Understand the Enemy: A Pedagogical Approach to the Moral and Political Aspects of Empathy and Dialogue.”
