National Geographic Photographer Lynsey Addario to Speak at UT April 4

On Wednesday, April 4, The University of Tampa will welcome American photographer Lynsey Addario, who regularly works for The New York Times, National Geographic and Time Magazine, as part of the National Geographic Live speaker series. The event begins at 1 p.m. in Reeves Theater on the second floor of the Vaughn Center and is free and open to the public.

Over the past 15 years, Addario has covered every major conflict and humanitarian crisis of her generation, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Darfur, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, South Sudan, Somalia and Congo. She recently released a New York Times best-selling memoir, It’s What I Do, which chronicles her personal and professional life as a photojournalist.

In 2015, American Photo Magazine named Addario one of the five most influential photographers of the past 25 years, writing that “Addario changed the way we saw the world’s conflicts.”

She has been the recipient of numerous international awards throughout her career. In 2009, she was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, for which she received a professional stipend from 2010 to 2015. She was part of the New York Times team to win the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for her photographs in “Talibanistan,” published in the New York Times Magazine.

Addario’s story is in development as a motion picture directed by Stephen Spielberg and starring Jennifer Lawrence.

This National Geographic Live event is sponsored by UT’s Office of International Programs. For more information about the event, contact Lisa Shemon, coordinator of international programs education and outreach, at (813) 258-7431 or lshemon@ut.edu.
