The Influence of NAFTA up for Discussion at UT Honors Symposium Dec. 2

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, The University of Tampa will welcome Michele Rioux, a political science professor at the University of Quebec at Montreal, as part of the University’s honors symposia series. The lecture begins at 5 p.m. in the Reeves Theatre on the second floor of the Vaughn Center, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd., and is free and open to the public.

Her talk, titled Trajectories of World Governance: Power Shifts and Structural Changes in a North American Perspective, will focus on how the influence of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has spread beyond North America.

Rioux will discuss how the growing economic importance of China in the North American region is reflected in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). If successfully negotiated, Rioux argues, the TPP will transform NAFTA strategically, creating new conditions and regulatory issues in line with a developing global value chain dynamic.

Rioux is a professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Quebec at Montreal and director of the Centre for the Study of Integration and Globalization (CEIM). A specialist in the political economy of globalization, her research focuses on international organizations and global governance, multinationals and integration process, competition policies, and the information and communications sector.
