The Breeders’ Cup Mobile App, conceived of by University of Tampa Junior
Molly McGill, has been selected as an official honoree in the sports
category of the 15th annual Webby Awards.
McGill pitched the
idea to the president of the prestigious horse racing organization while
walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge last April. He told her to put
together a proposal, which led to a six-week summer internship at the
Breeders’ Cup New York office, where she
helped design the application.
Those
who downloaded the app — 49,000 people from 86 countries — were able to
watch the races live on their iPhones. While the app did not take home
an award, it received the official honoree distinction, which was
awarded to only the top 10 percent of entries.
