On Friday, Jan. 31, Alison Myers, a local art therapist, and Scott Husband, associate professor of psychology, will present
Art for the Brain’s Sake: Neuroscience and the Power of Art at The University of Tampa. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, begins at 4 p.m. in the Bailey Art Studios on campus.
Studies of the brain have shown that art offers a powerful window into our psychology, enhances learning and promotes healing for a variety of mental health issues. This lecture will focus on the neuroscience of visual art and healing, as well as include hands-on activities.
Myers is a local art therapist who earned her master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from Notre Dame de Namur University in California. She provides art therapy services for individuals and groups through her private practice at Tampa Bay Art Therapy.
Husband earned his doctorate in experimental psychology from the University of South Florida. His main research area is behavioral neuroscience, with studies on visual processing in the brain, the effects of dopamine on cognition and the processes of brain evolution.
The event is sponsored by Live Well UT, the Arts Council of Hillsborough County and Arts for Health Florida. For more information contact Lisa Ryan at
