On Saturday, Nov. 15, members of The University of Tampa’s fraternity and sorority organizations will volunteer their time to six area organizations as part of Greeks Give Back.
The event is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Participants will gather at the Vaughn Center Courtyard and be taken by bus to one of six sites where they will work from 1 to 4 p.m.
This is the first in what organizers hope to make an annual event for the fraternity and sorority community at UT.
“We are hoping to grow this event every year and potentially have hundreds of Greeks serving the Tampa Bay community together,” said Lia Quinones ’16, new member director for UT’s chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta and a volunteer coordinator at the University’s PEACE Volunteer Center.
This year’s event is being organized by eight older members of Greek letter organizations who have a passion for leadership and service. Organizers are expecting around 100 participants, with at least three new members from each fraternity and sorority chapter at UT (24 chapters total).
Volunteers will work at one of six nonprofit organizations in the Tampa Bay community, including:
- The Children's Cancer Center
- The Humane Society of Tampa Bay
- Metropolitan Ministries
- Seniors in Service of Tampa Bay Inc.
- The Spring of Tampa Bay
- The Sustainable Living Project
UT’s fraternity and sorority community is comprised of five councils — Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Interfraternity Music Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Panhellenic Association. There are about 1,170 members in the Greek letter community, and approximately 500 have joined this calendar year. Service is a core value for each chapter and helps unite the chapters into one community.
