When Kaitlyn Gengler ’19 opened her suitcase after traveling back from her internship this summer, the whiff of fish nearly knocked her back.

“I opened my suitcase, and it was nasty,” said Gengler, who was a marine mammal fellow for Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, where for nearly three months she cleaned and scrubbed pools and prepped frozen herring, capelin and giant salmon to feed the resident mammals. “I would go to the grocery store after I was working all day, and people would give me side looks, and I was like, ‘I know I smell bad.’ But now I like that smell, because it reminds me of good memories.”
