On Thursday, April 12, The University of Tampa Sykes College of Business will hold its annual Adam Smith Breakfast. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. in the Crescent Club, which is located on the ninth floor of the Vaughn Center.

The Adam Smith Breakfast is geared toward local business community members operating in a global economy. The presentation will include an economic outlook of the Tampa Bay economy by John Stinespring, UT associate professor of economics, and a global macroeconomic outlook by Vivekanand Jayakumar, UT associate professor of economics.

On Friday, April 6, The University of Tampa will host a panel discussion on free speech and academic freedom. The presentation begins at 2 p.m. in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values, and is free and open to all UT students, faculty and staff, and the public.

Panelists include Amy M. Hass, general counsel for the University of Florida, and Howard Simon, executive director of ACLU of Florida, who will speak on controversial speakers on campus; M. Elizabeth Thorpe, assistant professor at The College at Brockport, who will discuss extramural speech; and Donald Downs, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who will touch on freedom in the classroom.

On Sunday, April 8, The University of Tampa’s 2017-2018 Sykes Chapel Concert Artist Series will conclude with a performance by the Philadelphia Brass, called “one of the gems of Philadelphia’s cultural life” by NPR’s Martin Goldsmith. The concert begins at 2 p.m. in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values and is free and open to the public.

The concert will have a special emphasis on American music, featuring works by Jennifer Higdon, Aaron Copland, Duke Ellington and Frank Loesser, among others.

John Capouya’s book, Florida Soul: From Ray Charles to KC and the Sunshine Band, has earned the Florida Historical Society 2018 Charlton Tebeau Award for a general interest book on a Florida history topic.

The little-known origin of The Twist is just one story Capouya chronicles in the book, whose origins began with an article Capouya wrote for The Tampa Bay Times on the 50th anniversary of Chubby Checker’s Twist and the role Hank Ballard played.

On Wednesday, April 4, The University of Tampa will welcome American photographer Lynsey Addario, who regularly works for The New York Times, National Geographic and Time Magazine, as part of the National Geographic Live speaker series. The event begins at 1 p.m. in Reeves Theater on the second floor of the Vaughn Center and is free and open to the public.

Over the past 15 years, Addario has covered every major conflict and humanitarian crisis of her generation, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Darfur, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, South Sudan, Somalia and Congo. She recently released a New York Times best-selling memoir, It’s What I Do, which chronicles her personal and professional life as a photojournalist.
