How do I sign up for the Standby List?
Continuing Students, who do not select a housing assignment through Returning Resident Room Selection, must sign up for the Standby List to be considered for a space on campus. To sign up for the Continuing Student Standby List, continuing students must contact the Office of Residence Life to gain access to the form, which will be accessible via Residence by Symplicity in the MyUTampa portal at https://utampa.okta.com/. Once in Residence by Symplicity, the Continuing Student Standby List will appear under the Housing Application section of the page.
New students must submit a housing application and pay their admissions and housing deposits to be offered a room on campus. The Office of Residence Life prioritizes on-campus assignments for new students; in the event that new student housing assignments are unavailable, a New Student Standby List communication will be provided to impacted incoming students, and they will automatically be placed on the New Student Standby List.
What is the difference between the New Student and Continuing Student Standby lists?
In alignment with the Housing Assignment Philosophy, the Office of Residence Life prioritizes the placement of new students in on-campus housing. Continuing students are eligible for housing assignments in continuing student residence halls based on availability. To view continuing student residence halls, please visit the Residence Halls page.
I have not applied for housing and it is close to the semester I plan to live on-campus. Can I still submit a housing application?

Can I sign up for the Standby List to wait for a specific room type to become available?
By joining a Standby List, the student will be offered the next available space on campus, regardless of room type. This includes The Barrymore Hotel. Students who decline their room placement will be placed at the bottom of the Standby List.
I am only interested in living on campus if I can have a single room or an apartment. Should I join the Standby List?
If a student only wants to live on-campus if they can secure a specific room type or residence hall, and they do not currently have on-campus housing, they are encouraged to join the Standby List to receive a housing assignment. Certain room types such as single rooms and apartments are limited due to high demand.
When a room is available, students will be offered the next available space via email. If the student is unsatisfied with their assignment, they may decline the offer and go to the bottom of the Standby List.
If I don’t like the room type I am assigned off the Standby List, can I cancel?
Room preferences are not taken into consideration for the Standby List. Offers from the Standby List may include any space on-campus, including The Barrymore Hotel. When an offer is made via email, students have the option to decline the offer and go to the bottom of the Standby list, or they may cancel their housing agreement. Students interested in cancelling must complete the Housing Cancellation form located in Residence by Symplicity.
If I accept a room but would like to be considered for another room type, is there a way to share this preference?
If a student has been offered and accepted an on-campus housing assignment and would like to be considered for other room types, they must participate in the room change process. For more information on room changes, please visit the room change website.
When will the Standby List close?
The Standby List will close at the end of the third week of each term. The Office of Residence Life will keep students on the Standby List until they are assigned a space on-campus or until the end of the third week of the term. At the end of the third week of the term, an email will be provided to any students remaining on the list to inform them of the closure. Students remaining on the Standby list are under no financial obligation for university housing.
Can I remove myself from the Standby List if I find other housing accommodations? How?
Students can remove themselves from the Standby List at any time by logging into Residence by Symplicity and completing the Housing Cancellation form or by contacting the Office of Residence Life at reslife@ut.edu. Students remaining on the Standby list are under no financial obligation for university housing.
How likely is it that I will receive a room off the Standby List? Can you tell me where/what number I am on the Standby List?
Assigning a student to housing from the Standby List is based on several factors. The Office of Residence Life reviews available spaces regularly, continuously working to assign as many students as possible. Given the dynamic nature of the assignment process and the volume of inquiries, the Office of Residence Life team are unable to provide status updates to individual students. Please know that our team is doing everything possible to accommodate as many students as possible.
How do I accept/decline an offer from the Standby list?
Once a student receives an email offer from the Office of Residence Life, they are given 48 hours to respond with their decision via their Spartan email address. Students must respond to the email to accept or decline the placement offer.
What happens if I miss the 48-hour response window for an offer off the Standby List?
If a student missed the 48-hour offer window, please email the Residence Life team at housingassignments@ut.edu as soon as possible. The Office of Residence Life cannot guarantee that the student’s original offer will still be available, and the student may be placed at the bottom of the list.
What if I have a housing accommodation from Student Accessibility Services?
Having an approved housing accommodation does not grant a student priority on the Standby List. Once a student is offered and accepts an available room, the Office of Residence Life will prioritize room changes for those with approved accommodations on a space-available basis.
I prefer not to join the Standby List. What other options do I have?
If a student does not wish to participate in the Standby List process, the Office of Residence Life encourages them to explore the Off-Campus Housing page for additional opportunities.
